IN THE COURT IN THE JAIL
The sheriff's office insures the county courts are secure and orderly. Deputies transport prisoners to hearings and trials and provide security during court proceedings. They also act as officers of the court and serve process, warrants and other legal notices on citizens as required.

The jail houses 27 inmates. They are being held for trial, awaiting their transfer to state institutions or serving their sentences. Years of experience, allow the sheriff to administer to a rising inmate population at the lowest possible cost. Successfully operating the jail in a cost effective and secure manner is a responsibility every sheriff takes seriously.

IN THE COMMUNITY ON THE ROAD
The best way to keep the peace is to prevent crime. Your sheriff and his deputies are active in the community, speaking before civic and youth groups. They are active in your schools, presenting DARE programs, acting as resource officers.

Most county sheriff's offices maintain a road patrol. Deputies patrol 24 hours a day, seven days each week, responding to emergencies, investigating crime and protecting every citizen. Deputies respond to thousands of calls every year in cases involving auto thefts, burglaries, drugs, homicides and a wide variety of other crimes.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH NEIGHBORHOOD

We are in the process of implementing the neighborhood watch program.

What It Is :
The Neighborhood Watch Program involves the joint efforts of the Sheriff’s Department, Newton Police Department and the community. It is designed to enhance neighborhood security, heighten the community’s power of observation and encourage mutual assistance and concern among neighbors.

The main objective of Neighborhood Watch is to reduce the incidence of crime by:
* Increasing citizens’ awareness of burglary and other neighborhood crime through a continuing information program.
* Developing a neighborhood action program where neighbors help watch each other’s property and report suspicious persons and activities to law enforcement agencies (Neighborhood Watch)
* Encouraging all citizens to cooperate with law enforcement agencies in reporting crime.

MISSING CHILDREN K-9 'MURKO'

LOCATER, Lost Child Alert Technology Resource, is a cutting-edge software program we are now using. With LOCATER, law-enforcement agencies create their own missing-person posters. High-quality copies can then be printed for distribution. Posters can be transmitted electronically to other agencies, the media, and the public via the Internet or through a "broadcast fax" service.

Our K-9's name is 'Murko' and his handler is Deputy Lingafelter. He is a 4-year-old German shepherd trained in Evansville Indiana.
