TRANSPORTATION Newton is the county seat and centrally located in Jasper county, Illinois. Methods of transportation within the county include rail, air and truck transport. RAIL TRAVEL The Indiana Railroad and Illinois Central Railroad provide rail service to Newton and connect with a national railroad system to provide rail transportation throughout the entire United States. AIR TRAVEL Airports for small planes are located at Effingham, Olney, Robinson, Flora, Lawrenceville, and Casey. Larger airports in the area having commuter flights include Mattoon, Illinois and Terre Haute, Indiana. St. Louis Lambert Field is 130 miles to the west and the Indianapolis Municipal Airport is 130 miles to the east. The nearest commercial airport is Coles County Memorial Airport, 45 miles away. MOTOR CARRIER Interstate Highways 57, 64, and 70 provide easy access within the Central Illinois area. State Route 33 is a class two truck route which extends from Interstate 57/70 at Effingham through Newton and into the state of Indiana. State Route 130 is a class two truck route which connects with Interstate 70 at Greenup, passes through Newton and connects with Interstate 64 at Grayville, IL. |
